The Ukrainian Institute of Modem Art (UIMA) is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Kimberly Piotrowski, Terry Schupbach-Gordon, and William Staples. These artists share an intuitive approach to mark making and while they develop distinctly different narratives, their commonality remains their commitment to exploring and manifesting quiet and private spaces.
Kimberly Piotrowski's paintings and works on paper show a sheer physical relish in the application of paint. The images occupy space dense with color and volume, their contours undulating with sensuality and lyricism.
Terry Schupbach-Gordon's prints are haunting images of memory and dreams. Looking inward, they speak of emotions too often denied or rejected. Terry uses texture and color not as formal devices, but for their ability to depict spiritual and emotional qualities.
William Staples produces quiet paintings that evoke music scores in their severe, linear aspect. The paintings are predominantly white, but it is the white of a winter fog. The formal elegance of this work is contrasted with the rows of his attentive cartoon figures visible through a mist of white glaze. This cartoon figure assumes the pathos of the undermined and powerless.
The Ukrainian Institute of Modem Art (UIMA), a not for profit arts organization, was founded in 1971. For over 25 years UIMA has served the local community and greater Chicago area with a program of exhibitions, concerts, lectures and multi-disciplinary events. The programs presented by UIMA are partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
