The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA) is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings, photographs and constructions by Chicago artists Ralph Arnold, Morris Barazani, Ghita Hardiman, Leopold Segedin and Joan Taxay-Weinger. This exhibition, previously on view at the Loyola University Art Gallery and the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture, presents the work of five mature artists who have been quietly pursuing their visions here in Chicago for over 20 years.

Ralph Arnold, currently a Professor at Loyola University, assembles collages both provocative and witty. Brilliantly colored, they challenge our assumed understanding of image and icon as used in popular media and art history.

Morris Barazani's paintings resonate with emotion. They are charged with the dynamism of his color sense and use of space, perhaps indicating landscapes that extend beyond the edge of his canvas.

Ghita Hardimon builds constructions which ripple and flow, barely contained by their physicality. Their jagged edges and curved lines acquire a calligraphic form that is powerfully lyrical.

Leopold Segedin narrates the dignity and pathos of working class individuals in urban settings. His paintings illuminate the courage and drama, as well as the quiet poetry of city life.

Joan Taxay-Weinger's paintings are both haunting and meditative. Her carefully composed studies of plants elevate the simple to the sublime.

The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA), a not for profit arts organization, was founded in 1971. For over 25 years UIMA has served the local community and greater Chicago area with a program of exhibitions, concerts, lectures and multi-disciplinary events. The programs presented by UIMA are partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
