man with woman, fleeing is one of several "be-quiet" works
which I have been working on over the past several months. While working
on these pieces I have been exploring the idea of "the necessary resolution"
in my work. I have defined this as the minimum amount of information
necessary in order to convey a mood or feeling. Emotions are many
times the result of poor communication, or more specifically the lack
of required information. Within the digital process, it is difficult
to accurately describe any process as a lossless one. While dealing
with digital media much time is spent talking about resolution and
pixels and other technical terms like these. The overall purpose of
which is to ensure that information is not lost somewhere in the process.
While it is ideal to consider digital media outside of time it is
not accurate to place it outside the world of decay. The ability to
introduce textural qualities to an image that is otherwise two-dimensional
references this notion of decay. While digital media revolves around
information and the transformation of that information, these conversions
are generally viewed as non-destructive, or minimally destructive.
However, I am interested in the computer as a destructive filter
for information that produces unexpected results within an expected
framework. man with woman, fleeing moves towards coupling the
minimum necessary information and the maximum possible destruction
of the original, while maintaining the emotional qualities of the
image in order to evoke response from the viewer.
