ATA BIENNIAL 4 INTERNATIONAL TAPESTRY EXHIBIT
March 2 to March 29

"A Day in a Page of Life"

Chicago, IL. — A dazzling array of contemporary tapestry is on view at the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art beginning March 2. Organized by the American Tapestry Alliance, a nonprofit organization that shares and preserves the knowledge and practice of tapestry art, the exhibit includes the works of artists from Europe, Canada and the U.S., selected by an international jury from 140 submissions.

First exhibited in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, and in San Diego, Calif., the show features 26 artists, including two-Lialia Kuchma and Ann McGinn-from the Chicago area.

Among the works is "Honor for Varad," which recalls old Hungarian traditions in abstract, "Ranger 7," inspired by the lunar probe that crashed into the moon in 1964; "Thomas/Luke II," an inner meditation on silence; and "A Day in a Page of Life," a woven record anticipating that which will be revealed through time.

"The accrual of pieces of wool-mere lines-into dense, evocative, mystifying, and compelling presences is celebrated in this gathering of works," notes Bettina Matzukuhn in the introduction to the CD catalogue. The works demonstrate craftsmanship and honor age-old traditions with a technical and conceptual freshness. Contemporary tapestry artists are using the ancient medium in new ways to make relevant artistic statements for this modern world.

A CD-ROM catalogue that features photos of each tapestry, statements by each artists, and comments by the jurors will be available for sale ($18).

The opening reception will be held March 2 from noon to 3 p.m. The exhibit will be on view until March 29. Located at 2320 W. Chicago Avenue, the Institute is open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
