The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA) is pleased to present Devotions, an exhibition examining spirituality as expressed formally and within a narrative. The work on view will include toned photographs by Jeffery Byrd, mixed media assemblages by Lynn Tomaszewski, and mixed media constructions by Toby Zallman. Jeffery Byrd lives and works in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where he is an Associate Professor at the University of Northern Iowa. His continued exploration of metamorphosis, decay and the physical limitations of the body have found form in both the photographic medium and in performances. His exhibition history includes one person shows at CEPA, Buffalo, NY, Icebox, Minneapolis, MN, as well as performances at NAME Gallery, Chicago, IL, the John Cage Festival at the Nexus Foundation in Philadelphia, PA, and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, MA. Lynn Tomaszewski of Milwaukee, WI, utilizes non-traditional materials such as tobacco, pine needles, and baking powder in her work. Her objects are not symbolic of a view, so much as they are the residue of emotional states. An ongoing concern for Tomaszewski is the conflict between the environment and the self, nature and the individual. Toby Zallman's recent work examines the dichotomy of materials and emotions. Her anthropomorphic shapes are not exercises in formalism, however, but mysterious presences referencing totemic images and archetypes. Recent exhibitions include the Chicago Cultural Center, Chicago, IL, the Evanston Art Center, Evanston, IL, and the Quincy Art Center, Quincy, IL. She lives and works in Chicago, IL, where she is represented by Perimeter Gallery. The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA), a not for profit arts organization, was founded in 1971. For over 25 years UIMA has served the local community and greater Chicago area with a program of exhibitions, concerts, lectures and multi-disciplinary events. The programs presented by UIMA are partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. |
