Artists Respond: Ukrainian Art and The
Orange Revolution
In December 2004 we saw the world focused squarely on the elections
in a country that is seldom the subject of national or global
headlines. The country is Ukraine and nearly one year ago, the
people of Ukraine asserted their right to not only free elections
but fair elections. The historical significance of what transpired
captured the hearts and minds of all who watched - from the attempted
poisoning of the democratic candidate to the mass demonstrations
in Kyiv's Independence Square. For two weeks the world witnessed
the power of a human spirit that desires freedom, fairness and
democracy.
Recognizing the historical significance of what was transpiring,
the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art in Chicago, in conjunction
with the Center for Contemporary Art (CCA) in Kyiv, will host
an exhibition of contemporary art that blossomed from the streets
of the revolution.
Artists Respond: Ukrainian Art and The Orange Revolution showcases
the work of this new generation of Ukrainian artists. The exhibit
not only captures the significance of a major historical event
but the works ask difficult questions surrounding Ukraine's
past, who it is now and how it will move forward.

Chicago Tapestry
Johnson/Kuchma/McGinn and Friends
Softscapes and Hardscapes is a visual medley of contemporary
art by Chicago Tapestry artists, David Johnson, Lialia Kuchma,
Anne McGinn, with Odette Brabec, Donna Hapac, Lisa Harris, Gina
Jalakas, and Laurie Shaman. Tapestries provide the softscape
background to the hardscapes of clay forms and vessels and fiber
sculptures. Individually, the works express various mindscapes
of the artists. Collectively, they present an engaging counterpoint
of form and fiber.

Aka Pereyma
40 Years of Creativity: 1965-2005
In 1963, at the Monolith Exhibit of Contemporary Ukrainian
Artists in Chicago, the art world got its first glimpse of
an artist who would ultimately make profound contributions
to the world of Ukrainian Modern Art. Four decades later,
we are celebrating that contribution and the body of work
that it produced. We are pleased to present to you the work
of Aka Pereyma: 40 Years of Creativity. From April 10th until
May 22nd, 2005, the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art will
display the work of Aka Pereyma. Visitors will have the opportunity
to experience the talent of this multi-layered artist through
a comprehensive exhibition of her drawings, watercolors, oils,
mixed media, sculptures and ceramics.
